Hi, April and Michele! My official title here at G&K is "Legal Secretary". We do not have "legal assistants"; rather, the term that is used is "paralegal". Our paralegals are required to have a paralegal certificate to attain that position. My attorneys usually refer to me as their "assistant" rather than their "secretary", so I think in our firm the interchangeability (is that a word?) is between "legal secretary" and "legal assistant", rather than between "paralegal" and "legal assistant." However, it seems that law firms can really differ on this distinction. I currently support four attorneys, one of them virtually as she now lives in Maine (I'm in Wisconsin). ------------------------------------------- Julie Dobie CAP Legal Secretary, Godfrey & Kahn SC -------------------------------------------

Good afternoon!
I am in my third week at Unum in Chattanooga, Law Department. I'm a Senior Legal Secretary, and I was excited to see this egroup available.
Are most participants in this group paralegals, legal secretaries, or a mix of both? I know in some firms, the titles are used interchangeably, although they really are two different roles. Either way, I'm glad to connect with a group with a legal specialty.
Thanks! April
